Senate Bill 34 (SB-34) is also called the Dennis Perron and Brownie Mary Act. According to this law, licensed cannabis operators can donate their products, free of charge, to patients in need. Dennis Perron and Brownie Mary were cannabis activists in the late 1900s. They believed in compassion projects for the betterment of the community.
The California government passed SB-34 in March 2020. It allows cannabis growers and dispensaries to give back to the community. In addition, donations can be made to lower-income medical cannabis patients. The Higher Path is taking active steps to repay the community through its Compassion Program and Veterans Program.
Sometimes we have directly collaborated with brands and donated proceeds to organizations. Other times we have marched, cleaned beaches, collected litter, and shared our support.
The Higher Path’s Compassion Program
The Higher Path’s Compassion Program offers medical cannabis to Los Angeles patients who can’t afford treatment for illnesses. We also offer a complimentary consultation to ensure patients receive proper treatment and products to soothe their symptoms. Consultations are available through phone, e-mail, or video chat.
How can you apply for the Compassion Program?
You must be a member of The Higher Path to apply for the program. You will also need a valid MMIC or a doctor’s recommendation. Next, you must fill out the application form and submit all supporting documents.
How can you apply for the doctor’s recommendation?
If you don’t have a doctor’s recommendation, you can get an appointment with a physician in a few minutes by submitting your email ID and phone number on The Higher Path recommendation page. You will receive a phone appointment with a doctor in 30 minutes or less. The doctor will understand your condition and make a recommendation. This recommendation is valid across all dispensaries in California.
A consultation with a doctor costs $39 for new patients and you can use the code THP15 to get a $15 discount.
How can you apply for an MMIC card?
MMIC is a Medical Marijuana Identification Card in California. It certifies a patient or a caregiver and protects their identity. A valid MMIC card allows you to save 14.5% on every purchase you make at The Higher Path. You need to follow a few easy steps to apply for an MMIC card:
- First, fill out the Application/Renewal Form.
- Then, apply in the same California county where you reside.
- Submit the following documents:
- A copy of your medical recommendation.
- A copy of written documentation in your medical records from your physician (medical doctor, osteopath, or podiatrist) stating you have a severe medical condition and that the medical use of marijuana is appropriate. Your physician may use the Written Documentation of Patient’s Medical Records (PDF) to satisfy this requirement.
- Identity Proof: A valid California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) driver’s license or other valid government-issued photo ID card.
- Proof of Residency: Rental or mortgage agreement, utility bill, or California DMV motor vehicle registration.
- Your county may have additional required documents.
- Pay a fee. The law mandates that this can’t exceed $100.
The Higher Path Veterans Program
SB-34 allows dispensaries to donate medical cannabis products to Veterans legally. At the Higher Path, we’re thrilled to provide high-quality, tested products to Veterans free of cost. It enables the Veterans to manage their health without worrying about the adverse effects of opiate-based medication.
Knowledgeable and expert organizations like the American College of Physicians, the American Public Health Association, and the American Nurses Association consider medical cannabis a much safer option than other treatments. In addition, it has also proven to be an effective tool in treating Veterans’ wound symptoms.
Here are some statistics of The Higher Path’s SB034 Veterans Program:
- We’ve had 60 compassion and 75 Veteran patients
- 36,826 products have been donated
- The value of products donated amounts to $700,000+
How can you apply for The Higher Path Veterans Program?
To apply for The Higher Path Veterans Program, you must be a Higher Path member and have a valid MMIC or a doctor’s recommendation. Then, you can fill out The Higher Path Veterans Program form. Monthly Events for Veterans

Brand Partnerships Supporting SB-34 at The Higher Path
The Higher Path can continue the Compassion Program because of the support of several brands and individuals. Some provide donations for events, and others provide us with products for our Compassion Program.
Our customers also have the opportunity to contribute to our Compassion Program. You can purchase one of our compassion products, and the proceeds go to our Compassion Program. If you make a larger donation, you can get your name on an ornament hanging on a tree in the middle of our budroom.
