Treating Cancer with Cannabinoids

Cancer. We’ve all been affected by this disease either directly or indirectly, and let me tell you – it’s a bitch. Whether you’re currently battling it, survived it or know someone facing it, it’s an awareness that hovers and won’t go away. One of the most common ways for patients to treat this disease is undergoing chemotherapy. However, a more therapeutic and taboo approach for treating cancer would be medicating with cannabis. Cannabis contains at least 85 different types of cannabinoids, which are active compounds that induce high-like effects. Some of these cannabinoids are known for treating cancer, two of which are THCa and CBD. Lets take a closer look at these cannabinoids and how they could benefit patients with cancer.

While THCa may sound similar to THC, they have different properties. Unlike THC, THCa is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. When heat is applied to THCa it is converted to THC, causing psychoactive effects for the user. The medicinal benefits of THCa are plentiful, one of which is treating cancer. This cannabinoid’s anti-proliferative ability has shown potential in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. Another benefit of this cannabinoid is the relief it may provide for patients undergoing chemotherapy. The side effects of chemo can range from headaches, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and appetite loss; all of which can be relieved by THCa due to it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-emetic properties.

Similarly to THCa, the non-psychoactive cannabinoid CBD embodies medicinal properties that are known for treating patients with cancer. Scientific research over the years has shown that this cannabinoid has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-depressant and anti-cancer properties; which makes it effective for cancer patients. This cannabinoid has been proven useful in inhibiting tumor growth, inhibiting cancer cells and relieving patients of side affects that come with this disease and/or chemotherapy.

As you can see, both THCa and CBD are very similar in their medicinal properties. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about how to treat cancer with these cannabinoids, ask one of THP’s knowledgeable cannabis consultants about the benefits of both and what method might be best for your needs.
